Tours of Corbière Lighthouse

Tours of the interior of Corbière Lighthouse are now available to book. Ports of Jersey has engaged Jersey Uncovered to conduct the tours, which are available from August until the end of October.

Several events were arranged to mark the 150^th anniversary of the illumination of the Lighthouse.  A plaque was unveiled by the Lieutenant Governor, the tower was floodlit for a month, and a three-D scan of the inside of the tower – courtesy of Jersey War Tours – was uploaded onto Ports of Jersey’s website.

A series of tours of the lighthouse has now been arranged, with qualified guides who have all the facts about the lighthouse at their fingertips.

Harbour Master, Captain Bill Sadler, said: “We have worked closely with Jersey Uncovered to set up this series of tours and we hope both Islanders and visitors will enjoy viewing this iconic Jersey landmark, and finding out more about its rich history.”

As the site still contains essential navigational equipment and is dangerous without supervision, Islanders are asked not to force their way past the gate at the bottom of the steps, but to book an organised tour which will allow safe, controlled access to the interior and exterior of the building.

Background

Many of the original brass fixtures and fittings remain inside the tower and generator room, and all are maintained by lighthouse caretakers on behalf of Ports of Jersey.

The lighthouse is still used by mariners as a navigational aid today, both as a painted day mark, and as a night-time warning sector light. Routine inspections and general maintenance are carried out throughout the year, and a full paint and maintenance programme is carried out, in line with Trinity House recommendations, approximately every seven years.

Today the site also houses a radar station which is critical to modern navigational management.
